Nursing
Nursing is one of the oldest and noblest professions. The responsibilities and duties of nurses are diverse and the work of a nurse depends on the qualification, skills, and situation. In every hospital, nursing is a key human element. Nurses work mainly in hospitals, within medical and surgical wards, intensive care units, operation theatre and emergency wards. But they also work in Nursing homes, Orphanages, old age homes, Clinics and Health Departments, industries etc.
Nursing involves shift duty on round the clock basis. Responsibility of a Nurse is diverse. She has to perform many duties; she has to keep record of temperature and pulse rates of patients, provide medication orally and hypodermically (injection), do dressing, assist patients in personal care, assist Physicians, Surgeons during treatments and examinations.
Indian Nursing Council is responsible for regulation & maintenance of uniform standards of training for Nurses, Midwives, Auxiliary Nurse Midwives & Health visitors.

Types Of Nursing :
Psychiatric nursing:
The Psychiatric nurses work with people who are suffering from psychological problems, mental and emotional disorders. Such nurses work in a mental hospital, in a general hospital or in a sanatorium.
Paediatric nursing:
These Nurses are responsible for the care of babies and children.
Industrial nursing:
Industrial Nurses are responsible for taking care and providing with emergency services to people working/residing in industrial area including first-aid in case of accidents and emergencies.
Midwives:
Midwives take care of mothers and children from early pregnancy until about four weeks after the birth of the baby.
General nursing:
These nurses are assigned for general health related issues in hospitals etc.
Public health nursing:
In this field, nurses are trained to work in government health care centers and even in private clinics to provide with basic health care services to the local population. These nurses work mostly in the rural areas; arranging for immunisation, health screening, and blood pressure checking, etc.
Other options include Nursing Administration which is related to mainly monitoring safety and compliance standards and Nursing Education which is related to teaching as well as administering educational programs of nursing.Some other areas are Orthopedic nursing , Cardio – thoracic vascular Nursing, Neuromedical and Neurosurgical Nursing.
Courses:
1. B.Sc. (Nursing) :-
Duration: 4 years.
Minimum qualification: 10+2 with Physics, Chemistry, Biology and English.
2. B.Sc. (Nursing) Post basic .
Duration: 2 years.
Qualification 10+2 or equivalent in Science + GNM with work experience
2. General Nursing and Mid-wifery (GNM) course :-
Duration: 3 and 1/2 years
Minimum qualification: 10+2 with Physics, Chemistry, Biology, English. Every year there is an examination conducted by the Nursing council.
3. Auxiliary Nurse/Midwife (ANM) /Health Workers (MHW) (Female) :-
Duration: 18 months.
Minimum qualification: 10th class
Other Courses:
M. Sc. / M.Phil. / Ph.D.
