A forensic scientist collects and documents evidence, examines and does laboratory analysis of evidence including physical materials, chemical substances, ballistics, fingerprints, handwriting, documents, etc. Depending on the field of expertise you want to pursue; you should earn a B.Sc. degree in chemistry, biology, physics, zoology, or any other related degree in a science discipline, or forensic science. Thereafter, for better opportunities specialise and get M.Sc. degree in any particular forensic science field . Some colleges also offer PG diploma courses in fingerprint science, forensic document, etc.
Employment opportunities exist mostly in law enforcement and investigative agencies and also in private agencies. UPSC conducts examination for recruitment to Scientific Officer posts in Forensic Science Laboratories in India.
